60 kW Off-Grid Solar Power System – Ma Juah Memorial Hospital (100-Bedroom Facility), RIA Highway, Liberia

A Fully Independent Solar Power Plant Engineered for Critical Healthcare Operations & 24/7 Reliability

Project Summary

Stone Age International engineered, supplied, and installed a 60 kW fully off-grid solar PV power plant for the Ma Juah Memorial Hospital located along the RIA Highway.
The hospital, a 100-bedroom medical facility, required an energy system able to support continuous operations, sensitive medical equipment, refrigeration units, lighting, and essential patient-care services — without dependence on the national grid.

This project demonstrates our capacity to design and implement large-scale, standalone solar energy systems that meet strict safety, reliability, and medical-grade performance requirements.

Client Objectives

The hospital faced:

  • Unreliable grid power, affecting patient care
  • High diesel generator expenses
  • Frequent equipment interruptions
  • Demand for clean, silent, and stable electricity

The client needed a high-capacity, hospital-grade power solution that guarantees:

✔ 24/7 uninterrupted power supply
✔ Reliable support for critical medical equipment
✔ Reduced operational costs
✔ Long-term energy independence
✔ Scalability for future hospital expansion

Stone Age International delivered a robust solution tailored to these needs.

Scope of Work Delivered

We executed a complete EPC turnkey delivery, including engineering design, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover.

1. Comprehensive Medical Power Load Assessment

We conducted a deep technical analysis of:

  • Critical load circuits (laboratory, emergency ward, maternity ward, pharmacy)
  • Non-critical load segregation
  • Power factor & voltage stability requirements
  • Medical equipment sensitivity
  • Refrigeration autonomy needed for medicine
  • Surge load from appliances and small machinery

This enabled us to accurately size the PV array, inverter bank, and battery system for 24/7 operation.

2. Engineering, System Architecture & Simulation

Using PVsyst, HelioScope, AutoCAD Electrical, and NEC 690-based design tools, our engineering team developed:

  • Full 60 kW PV array design with optimal tilt & orientation
  • Battery bank sizing for night-time autonomy
  • Distribution board modification & load balancing
  • Custom Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
  • Earthing & lightning protection plan
  • AC/DC protection coordination
  • Surge protection design for both medical and administrative sections

All system architecture complied with:
IEC 61730, IEC 62109, IEC 60364, NEC 690, ISO 45001, and hospital-grade safety recommendations.

3. Procurement of High-Certification Components

We used premium, internationally certified equipment including:

  • Tier-1 monocrystalline solar panels
  • Commercial-grade inverters with multi-MPPT capability
  • High-cycle lithium or industrial battery bank
  • Class I & II SPDs (Surge Protection Devices)
  • AC/DC isolators and breakers
  • Heavy-duty grounding system
  • UV-resistant cabling and protective conduits
  • Industrial-grade PV mounting systems

All components met UL, TUV, & IEC certifications.

4. High-Precision Installation & Infrastructure Integration

Our senior technicians and engineers executed:

  • Structural mounting with anti-corrosion hardware
  • PV array wiring with optimal string configuration
  • Battery bank assembly, thermal spacing, and ventilation compliance
  • Integration with existing hospital circuits
  • Implementation of redundancy paths for essential loads
  • Earthing grid installation for medical safety
  • Surge and lightning protection for equipment longevity
  • Labeling & tagging of every AC/DC circuit for safety compliance

The hospital now operates with the reliability of a mini solar power station.

5. Testing, Commissioning & Hospital Staff Training

We carried out:

  • No-load and full-load performance testing
  • Inverter synchronization tests
  • Battery charge/discharge cycle verification
  • Critical load simulation during outages
  • System stability tests under fluctuating conditions
  • Grounding system resistance test
  • Emergency shutdown procedure demonstrations

We also provided staff training on:

  • System operation
  • Safety procedures
  • Efficient energy usage
  • Monitoring & troubleshooting

A full commissioning certificate and maintenance guidelines were delivered.

Project Outcome

The 60 kW solar system now delivers:

Full off-grid power 24/7
✔ Zero reliance on LEC
✔ Major reduction in generator expenses
✔ Stable operating environment for sensitive medical devices
✔ Improved patient safety and service delivery
✔ Predictable long-term energy budgeting
✔ Cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable hospital operations

This installation transformed the hospital into a fully energy-secure medical facility.
